Do you remember a time when it was just cereal and milk for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and meat and 3 veg (or pasta) for dinner, with fruit, yoghurt and toast for snacks? This was pretty much how my family ate growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s and we were healthy, energetic kids.

The good news is that eating well does not need to be complicated or involve special ingredients or expensive “superfoods”. The following relatively simple concepts are one brilliant way to avoid getting confused about what or how to eat, and you can apply them to just about any style of eating.

1. Eat food because you’re hungry
2. Eat enough of what your body needs for both nourishment and pleasure
3. Eat food that you enjoy the taste of

(We acknowledge that it is a privilege to be able to eat this way and not everyone has access to, or can afford to eat this way)

You don’t need to make food choices based on calories, carbs or the latest food trend – and no you don’t need to completely avoid sugar, eat “clean” or go “Keto”. That said, if you really enjoy any of these eating trends and you feel they serve you well both mentally and physically, then of course that’s fine too.

So let’s unpack this…

Diet culture, and indeed mainstream nutrition advice, has most people believing a meal of fish with lots of veggies must be healthier than pizza.

While both meals offer a variety of nutrition and both can be equally as healthy, there are many instances where enjoying pizza can be the healthier choice.

Let’s look at some examples of what can happen when you see pizza as the unhealthy choice…

Your partner wants pizza for dinner and although you secretly would like pizza too, you refuse in the name of health and end up eating separately and not enjoying time together.

Eating the fish and veggies, although tasty, doesn’t quite satisfy and you end up “searching” for something else, which results in you eating something you didn't intend to and perhaps feeling overfull. Of course, if you do eat something you didn't intend to, there's nothing inherently wrong with this. It's only if you would have preferred not to eat that it may be an issue.

You’ve planned to catch up with friends for dinner and when everyone’s happy to go with pizza except you, you find an excuse not to go out with them.

You miss out on the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal that also gives you a good variety of nutrition.

In my 18 years practising as a dietitian, one of the most common things I hear people say is “I can’t stop at just one.” While some people have a very complex relationship with certain food that goes beyond the scope of this piece, the majority of people I see discover they can stop at just one and that they are not addicted to sugar when they address the following issues.

If you don’t follow Ragen, I strongly encourage you do.

Posted @withregram • @ragenchastain We have known for years that intentional weight loss attempts create far, far more harm than good. We have known for years that weight cycling, weight stigma, and healthcare inequalities harm fat people.

The weight loss industry has gone a wrong way down a very bad road, but that doesn’t mean we can’t turn back – and it’s the only ethical thing to do.

Image Text:
The healthcare system creates
weight stigma, weight cycling, and inequalities, blames fat bodies for the harms that result, then uses those harms to justify more weight stigma,
weight cycling, and inequalities.

The way to break this cycle is to stop pathologizing fat bodies, stop prescribing doomed-to-fail weight-loss interventions, and start focusing on supporting fat people in their health priorities and goals in the bodies they have.

It’s actually a traditional Italian dish - Pasta Al Burro

It could also be Mac & Cheese. This is not dissimilar to my cheese toastie story for those of you who loved that post!

When looking for something to throw together for lunch this week, I found the remnants of 3 old packets of pasta - you know the ones that get pushed to the back of the cupboard to be forgotten?

Suddenly I had a desire for plain pasta with butter and parmesan (I used pecorino as that’s what we had).

It was delicious and it got me thinking how this was likely a very nutrient dense meal, but that most people would label it “unhealthy”.

So I used me fancy nutritional analysis program and lo and behold - a days worth of food with just these foods (+ the orange) provides almost complete nutrition and meets the dietary guidelines balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates!

As mentioned, I’m not recommending we eat like this, it would be terribly boring - that said, if it was all you could afford much of the time, you’d be doing ok.

Thoughts welcome!

This is perfectly nutritious breakfast food!

Often I have clients who would love to eat toast for breakfast - it’s quick, easy, inexpensive - but they don’t as they’ve been led to believe by our diet culture, or “wellness” gurus, that it’s not healthy.

This can then mean they don’t feel they have time for breakfast as making a smoothie bowl, a cooked high protein breakfast or a fancy smoothie is just too time consuming (not to mention expensive).

I also have clients express concern that putting jam on their toast would be too much sugar. Enjoying jam or honey on your toast is not too much sugar.

Coffee and 2 slice of toast with jam, marmalade (or Vegemite) is what I enjoy for breakfast most days. I mainly use a good amount of olive oil as my spread and sometimes butter depending on what I feel like!

Yes there is too much readily available food high in added sugar, but we need to stop blaming the sugar itself or placing all responsibility in people’s food choices, instead we need to target and change food industry. If it wasn’t so easy to access excess sugar in food, things might be quite different.

Recently I’ve seen a number of teenagers who believed sugar was truly bad for them. This belief has led some into disordered eating and others to an eating disorder, all feel terrible about themselves and express significant anxiety and fear around food.

The “sugar is bad” message comes from all angles, well-meaning parents, school teachers, diet culture and a certain popular documentary on sugar “that sugar film”.

I do not blame the parents or teachers, they are just doing what they think is best - we urgently need to change how our culture thinks about food.

Even if the adults and documentaries are not saying “sugar is toxic” or “sugar is bad” in so many words, the messages they carry are read by many kids as exactly that. This is exacerbated by a world that is obsessed with “health” and the notion that controlling body weight and avoiding certain foods, is a means to achieve not only this perception of “health”, but also self worth.

The message kids are getting are:
- Any amount of fatness is bad, wrong and unhealthy
- I will be more accepted, liked and confident if I look a certain way
- One must eat a certain way to achieve the “less fat” body and be “healthy”
- Sugar is bad and will lead to fatness and ill health

If you are concerned about your child, please contact @eatingdisordersvictoria or @thebutterflyfoundation or an ED association near you.

AND they're SHAMELESSLY co-opting our powerful anti-diet movement! AND they're claiming that 'psychology' is the key to 'long term weight loss!' AND they're selling a particularly shitty diet!
