Are you constantly confused by food and nutrition messages?
For years you’ve heard saturated fat is bad, now you’re hearing it’s good and to eat more! Some say sugar is ok, others say it’s poison.
If you want to stop being so confused, I have one relatively simple suggestion.
STOP WATCHING COMMERCIAL TELEVISION.
At least programs that talk about nutrition.
Why? Commercial TV is commercial, meaning it is out to make a profit. It’s main interest is in making money and it will do this from stories that SELL. They are not really interested in your health or well-being.
The media knows people like headline grabbing news like “The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat & Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet.”
While the Mediterranean diet has rock solid evidence – there is nothing headline grabbing about it and no BIG corporations that stand to make money from pushing a health message. Same goes for vegetables which pretty much EVERYONE agrees we need to eat more of.
Given dietitians get flack for food partnerships, I can’t help but wonder what big food corporations (meat industry, dairy industry, fast food industry) helped “The Big Fat Surprise” with her “research”. There is also a well known TV identity spruiking the wonders of coconut, who has teamed up with makers of coconut water to sell a product. Bias is rife.
Anyway, off my soapbox now and about to tuck into my delicious cauliflower & ricotta pasta bake with olive oil. So happy to be eating grains and dairy.
