While many can learn to reconnect to their appetite cues, not everyone can, and that’s ok.

Some people may need strategies or reminders to manage their eating.

I’m noticing a key misconception with intuitive eating is this idea that A) you’ll always know what you feel like and B) that you’ll be able to eat that food.

Half the time I don’t know what I want to eat and so I just go with what’s available, easy enough and something I know will satisfy me, even if it’s not the most exciting choice.

Being able to eat intuitively is a privilege and not everyone has access to enough food, or the food they would like to eat.

Sadly some people will always recieve judgement around their eating and food choices and some will continue to struggle with their own judgement because we live a world deeply conditioned to judge. Therefore not everyone can achieve the idea of complete “food freedom”.

Intuitive eating is not some destination you reach where you always “get it right”.

The Intuitive Eating framework should aim to help you know what works best for you

This may or may not include;

Clear appetite connection
Being able to eat what you feel like
Having strategies to remember to eat
A sense of freedom and lack of judgement with your eating

There is nothing black or white about the process

This has been my lunch last 2 days and I wanted to share it as it’s so yummy! Perfect on these freezing winter days too.

When I make my mash, I make a big batch to use for lunches and of course have some with dinner that night.

You can add pretty much any flavour you like, if you don’t have sumac (lemon flavour), a squeeze lemon juice will do, or just leave it out. Smokey paprika works well too.

Who loves potato?

Quick, easy, cheap recipe share

1. Mashed potato
2. Carrot, grated
3. Tinned tuna (in oil)
4. Salt, sumac, cayenne pepper

Fry it all up with olive oil and it's kinda like a bubble & squeak. So warm, tasty and nourishing!

Besides, there are no “right” food choices based on nutrition as nutrition doesn’t happen meal to meal, or even day to day. Nutrition happens over many meals, over many days.

The RIGHT choice might be what you feel like based on flavour, temperature, mood, time of day or who you’re with. This could literally be ANY food.

A healthy attitude to food and eating is more important than always making the "right" food choice

If you’re new to the world of Love What You Eat or Intuitive Eating, you may not have discovered the Moderation Movement @themoderationmovement

Jodie and I launched the Moderation Movement in 2014 when Paleo Pete and “I quit sugar” were all over Facebook and the media.

We simply wanted to let people know they didn’t need to go to thees extremes to eat well and also expose how damaging such extremes with eating can be to many people.

We amassed a huge following on Facebook very quickly (now >40K) which showed us that people wanted to hear a different message.

We were locked out of our original instagram (@moderationmovement) which is still there, we just can’t access it and so we started another account @themoderationmovement which is where you can find us and hear moderate sensible messages around food, learn about the importance of self compassion and discover how health is so much more than just what you eat or how you look.

We hope to see you there!

I had a student dietitian doing a placement with me and I set her the task of writing a blog and this is what she did - I was very impressed!

It’s common to see a breakdown of food diaries on social media these days. However, is the daily vlog of “what I eat in a day” negatively affecting people?

A response I received to my post yesterday (via facebook) was; “They are both processed, just eat real food”.

I responded with “Almost everything we eat is processed to make it available for us to eat, this includes nuts, meat, fish, bread, rice, quinoa, rolled oats, tofu, milk, yoghurt, cheese etc”

It is not possible or realistic to live on fresh fruit and vegetables alone and even if it were, we would need to spend most of our day eating in order to get enough energy and nutrition (if even possible) and we wouldn’t have evolved to the extent we have… aside from the fact it would be super boring!

I know this person wasn’t suggesting we just live on fruit and veg, but either way, not everyone has the luxury of being able to buy only fresh food and cook everything from scratch - this requires a level of privilege.

Is processed food bad for you?

A: No

Almost everything we eat is processed to make it available for us to eat, this includes nuts, meat, fish, tofu, legumes, bread, quinoa, rolled oats, milk (all types), yoghurt, cheese etc

Healthy can be sharing any delicious food with friends with appreciation for the food and without any sense of guilt.

This could be cake, pizza, a fruit platter, cheese platter or a block of chocolate!

My new Instagram look is thanks to student dietitian Mikayla White 😍

After a session where we discussed how bread is not “bad” or “fattening” and is in fact, a very nutritious food, one of my clients started eating bread again.

And at our next session she said "I had a salad sandwich the other day and it was amazing!"

It’s crazy when you think how people have come to fear certain foods - this lady’s fear was mainly around weight gain - to the point a simple food like a sandwich becomes a “no-no”.

Diet culture has done so much damage and has so much to answer for.

"I had a salad sandwich the other day and it was amazing!"

The idea that certain food groups are "bad" creates a culture of shame and discomfort around eating to our own needs.

For this client, overcoming and being able to enjoy what was once a fear food was a wonderful experience!

Do you remember a time when it was just cereal and milk for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and meat and 3 veg (or pasta) for dinner, with fruit, yoghurt and toast for snacks? This was pretty much how my family ate growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s and we were healthy, energetic kids.

The good news is that eating well does not need to be complicated or involve special ingredients or expensive “superfoods”. The following relatively simple concepts are one brilliant way to avoid getting confused about what or how to eat, and you can apply them to just about any style of eating.

1. Eat food because you’re hungry
2. Eat enough of what your body needs for both nourishment and pleasure
3. Eat food that you enjoy the taste of

(We acknowledge that it is a privilege to be able to eat this way and not everyone has access to, or can afford to eat this way)

You don’t need to make food choices based on calories, carbs or the latest food trend – and no you don’t need to completely avoid sugar, eat “clean” or go “Keto”. That said, if you really enjoy any of these eating trends and you feel they serve you well both mentally and physically, then of course that’s fine too.

So let’s unpack this…
